Nature and Environment
The border and junction land you find between Ausa and Isonzo, where rivers flow into the sea after collecting the waters of torrents, irrigation ditches, canals and resurgences, is really peculiar. Here the extreme oriental offshoots of the Po-Veneto valley meet the Illyrian-Karst plateau, the Julian and Carnic Alps meet the lagoon of Grado, the gulf of Trieste and the Istria Coast.
In this land you can admire a unique nature, which is the result of different elements that have met during thousands of years, the species overlapping and osmosis, environments and landscapes, which are valuable if considered singularly but certainly even more if seen in this context, where they acquire more value because they’re close one to the other.
Starting from the north, on pebbly riverbank of the stream Torre, you find magredo, a steppe characterized by poor fields and by fierce wind that comes from the pebbly riverbanks of the high Friuli plain, where autochthonous plants grow since the Barbarian invasions. This is a further evidence of the peculiarity of this area, which is the crossroads of different cultures and natures.
Then you find the planiziale wood, which has characterized this area since the Roman colonization and that was part of the Silva Lupanica, the huge forest that extended between the rivers Isonzo and Livenza. It was a humid wood, because of the resurgence water and the temporary marshes caused by the overflows of the waterways. Its flora consists especially of oaks, alders, elms, field maples, hawthorns, cornel trees, and, lest we forget, holm-oaks, in the most southern woods.
More in the south, you find an area very rich in water, thanks to irrigation ditches, canals, ditches, resurgence, which have influenced and have been influenced by the human presence.
Finally, you reach the lagoon, which is a really fascinating environment thanks to the complexity of its development and transformation during time and to the naturalistic qualities, characterized by:
  • Very thick beds of reeds, that house various bird and small mammal species;
  • sandbanks, beds of silt with a thick grassy vegetation of sea-green colour in warm season and bright red in autumn;
  • slime, sandy stretches that surface during low waters and constantly visited by flight of waders.
