The secrets of the Lands of Aquileia
Thanks to its geographical position, the Lands of Aquileia have always played a strategic role in this area, as historians have described it.
Before, during the protohistoric Age, here migrations and the demographical changes took place, between north and south, east and west.
Later on, during the Roman Age, these lands represented the bridge between east and west, the road link-up of the commercial exchanges and trade between central-northern, eastern, southern and western Europe.
Then, during the Age of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, this area developed such a strategic role and from lands of passage turned into lands of message.
As a matter of fact, the geopolitical events of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, that became the greatest Christian diocese in Europe, turned this place into the appointed place, the natural landing place and where peoples and religious points of view compared, even if antithetical, meanings of different civilizations. It was a sort of cultural watershed between western and eastern Europe, an unicum in the old continent for its originality.
In the Lands of Aquileia that role is still evident nowadays, above all in the oral tradition, in the city planning, in the architecture, in the art, in the lifestyle. However, they are often concealed by changes and transformations that time and history have naturally been overlapping and developing on those roots.
